Diet Drinks Make You Fat!

Updated: Mar 1, 2022

Cut out the sugar in your diet.

Sugar is not good for us, and it can have a significant effect on our health and waistlines. However, even artificial sugars can have the same effect on our bodies.

Research has shown that artificial sweeteners like aspartame and sucralose can encourage weight gain and increase your risk of type 2 diabetes. This is because artificial sweeteners are over 200 sweeter than natural sugar; when consuming these, you start to set habits for choosing sweeter food and drinks, which increase your weight.

When we have artificial sweeteners, receptors in our brain thinks this sweetness has calories attached to it. Your brain can not distinguish between actual sugars and fake, and you start to crave calories. When we have sugar, signals are sent from our body to produce more insulin to process it; this also happens with artificial sugar. Our bodies release a hormone that says we are taking in sugar into our blood. Because we are not burning off this extra sugar that our brain thinks it has taken into the body, these then get laid down as fat into the cells, as it is seen as excess energy and thinks it needs to store it. Too much insulin output can lead to insulin-resistance weight gain and type 2 diabetes.

When we diet, our fat cells shrink, but they are left with a memory. However, when we start to eat unhealthy food, our fat cells start to grow again quickly.

Weight gained is caused by the creation and expansion of white fat cells or adipose tissue. Dieting can shrink fat cells but not eliminate them, which is why people can gain the weight back so quickly.
