You have to now start to think that you have the freedom from food ruling you, by stop giving food a second thought. When you are overweight and you are truly not happy with your health and body image, you feel powerless, ashamed, disgusted with yourself and frustrated because you have let your mind take over your body. Don’t diet, they never work. When you go into starvation mode your body reduces calories out, in an attempt to restore energy balance and stop you from losing any more weight. This is when you brain puts your body into survival mode to conserve energy. It also makes you hungrier, increases your craving for food and you lack energy.
Calories you burn naturally in a day are split into 4 groups:
BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate) = The amount of calories your body uses just to maintain body functions.
TEF (Thermic Effect of Food) = Calories burned while eating food this is usually 10% of the food intake.
TEE (Thermic effect of Exercise) = The amount of calories we burn while exercising.
NEAT (Non-Exercise Activity Thermogenesis) = Calories burned fidgeting, just moving all done subconsciously.
When you are into starvation mode all 4 in this group slows down, so you burn fewer calories. Also your hormones slow down including thyroid and leptin. Research has shown that leptin resistance in which your body does not respond to this hormone, is now believed to be the leading driver of fat gain in humans. Leptin is a hormone that produced by your body’s fat cells, its meant to tell your hypothalamus in your brain that you have enough fat stored, you don’t need to eat. When you go into starvation mode this hormone slows down its signal to the brain, the brain then thinks in error that there is not enough energy coming into the body and then stores the fat cells that you have already.
Obese people may have leptin resistance in their body, which means you may be trapped in the cycle of gaining weight and increasing leptin resistance. If you have a lot of body fat, especially in the belly area, then you are more than likely to be leptin resistant.
By avoiding processed food, eating soluble fibre, exercising reducing your carbohydrates and increasing your protein can improve your leptin sensitivity.
